Building Trust

Trust is defined as the firm belief in the reliability, truth or ability of someone or something. it is a fundamental requirement in any relationship and it can be grown or lost over time due to the actions and inactions of the parties involved.

In Genesis 12 we see two unique forms of trust; the first was between God and a man and the second was between members of a family and the family head.

Between God and a man:- Abraham the father of faith (who at this time still went by the name Abram) had built such a relationship with God over the course of his life that he now trusted God enough to pull up his whole family and start a journey to a destination he had no idea of. How weird would it sound if a person told you they are going out but then go on to say they don't know where they are going. That was the situation Abram was in, it's like saying you're going to the university but you don't know which university or what course you'd be studying yet you pack you bags and set out, what if you don't get an admission? why not first get the admission before setting out? How crazy would your family think you have gotten? That was the dilemma for Abram.

In modern language we would say he was nuts and didn't know what he was doing. we might  offer him psychiatrics help so he can regain a sense of normalcy but this man had overtime built trust in God, he had come to know that no matter what God had his bad. This knowing doesn't come simply from reading or watching stuff it comes from experience usually personal experience. so we could say Abram had experienced so much that he could stake his life on God's word. This is the highest form of trust and is sometimes metamorphose into love.

Between a family and it's head. this kind of trust is a reflection of the one discussed above and usually is enjoyed by men who Trust God as in the firstly discussed scenario. I'm not saying it cannot be organically generated because to a large extent it actually can but I'm not here to bore you with the intricate details of how that can happen. it simply is the kind of trust people have after experiencing your consistent results overtime. it is this kind of trust we have in our pastors and our leaders it is this kind of trust leaders should hope to inspire in their subordinates.

Imagine your dad coming home one afternoon and saying we are leaving but i don't know where we are going ? you would immediately ask if he is alright and tell him to rest a bit as the day's work was already wearing him out. this was the scenario that happened to Abram. Yet his team (family) trusted him enough to follow without argument. even his nephew followed him. this is a proof of trust in him having been consistent and true for a good length of time.

This is the level of trust people should have in us. they should be able to hold us our words and feel safe and secure in our promises otherwise how would we get them to trust God if they are unable to trust us.
